Pre-Session 1: Reading Alouds: Making Instruction Intentional

« Back to the Main Inquiry Cycle

What do we mean by interactive read aloud or making instruction intentional? Use the text rendering protocol to guide the discussion, read and discuss the text, Reading Moves.

As we watch the video of a primary teacher modeling interactive read aloud (26:13 min.) and the debrief with her coach, think about the following:

  • Level of student engagement
  • Classroom routines that promote student engagement
  • Intentional instructional goals associated with the read aloud
  • Integration of learning from multiple texts

Using the text, K-3 essential practices, as a basis for the discussion, identify aspects of essential practices represented in this modeled lesson.

Facilitator's Note: If time for this session is limited to 45 minutes, consider asking participants to read the article in advance and jot some notes.
