Pre-Session 2: Exploring the Characteristics of High Quality Texts

When we think about interactive read alouds, what are the characteristics of high quality texts? Using a modified text rendering protocol,invite teachers to Read and share Characteristics of High Quality Texts. In this instance the teachers should write their notes from the text rendering on post it notes to use later in label specific books.

Book Look and Label: Teachers sit in small groups (no more than 10 teachers- mixed grade levels) with one book each. Spend 30 seconds exploring text. Mark with post- it note from text rendering activity and share out; Pass book and repeat.

Brainstorm: How might this text be used as part of purposeful instruction? Next pass, teachers brainstorm how the text might be used as part of literacy learning. Mark with post-it note and share.

Close by selecting one book to bring back to grade level groups and share characteristic and purpose. This exercise is ideal anytime the school/library receives an order of books to ensure teachers are collaborating around how they might become an intentional part of instruction.

 

Facilitator's Note:

If this session has extended time available we suggest the following modifications:

  • If you are not starting with books new to the school, invite teachers come with at least one text to share with group.  These texts can be the source of books used in the Book Look and Label activity. 
  • The facilitator needs to bring several models of high-quality texts for the book look and share. This session can conclude with the group creating a shared definition of a high quality texts they want to see in their school/classroom.
