An Overview of Supporting Elementary Writers

This inquiry cycle provides an opportunity to not only examine the amount of time and opportunities students have devoted to writing but what those experiences look like. Whether you use a specific writing program or have a "home grown" variety, it is important to think about the kinds of writing experiences and supports you offer students and why. Often, these discussions can get stuck in logistical conversations around schedules and access to materials. In this inquiry cycle, we invite the group to constructively examine existing writing practices and introduce new practices as well.

The Learning Sessions

The following learning sessions are set up in an intentional sequence. The ideas and concepts build upon each other and require some additional actions back in the classroom. Each session is design for approximately a 45 minute block of time. Additional activities and resources are provided if additional time is available. As long time facilitators of professional learning, we strongly encourage a more extended kick off learning session before diving into an inquiry cycle. In the case of this inquiry cycle, teh primary goal of the initial kick off would include an opportunity to take stock of existing writing practices across grades.
